Musicians and performers spend hours upon hours refining sound, gesture, and expression toward an audience. This workshop offers a space to move without performing, without a plan, and without anyone watching for a “right” way to do it. Whether you play an instrument, act, sing, dance, or are just curious about embodiment this workshop is for you - no dance background required.
Authentic Movement (AM) is an improvisational form developed by dancer and expressive arts therapist Mary Starks Whitehouse. While it can be used in a therapeutic setting it is also practiced around the world by artists and other people interested in embodiment and physical expression. It is in that vein that we will explore AM in this workshop, facilitated by dancer and teacher Jules Skloot. Participants will be invited to move from their own curiosity with their eyes closed, allowing and following the impulses that arise in their bodies and exploring these impulses without self-judgement. Each mover will have a witness who watches without judgment, projection, or interpretation.
