The Northampton Center for the Arts (NCFA) is looking for self-motivated, creative, organized interns for our youth summer vacation arts programming, the Barn Door Gallery, and in the dynamic and ever-changing operational work of general arts administration. These are unpaid internships, and NCFA staff are enthusiastic about working with local college students who are able to access funding or credit from their institutions as compensation for their work. DESCRIPTION

The Northampton Center for the Arts (NCFA) is a non-profit organization that provides affordable space for artists, performers, and educators while fostering arts education, multidisciplinary collaborations, and community connections. Our programming spans music, dance, theatre, visual arts, and beyond, strengthening the arts ecology of the greater Northampton area.

We are seeking an enthusiastic, part-time Arts Administration Intern to work closely with one of our Co-Directors. This role is ideal for someone with a strong interest in the field of arts administration and nonprofit leadership, who is professional, detail-oriented, and organized. Candidates should have a passion for supporting the arts and a desire to learn about the operational and strategic aspects of managing a nonprofit arts organization. This position offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a vibrant arts environment while working alongside our dynamic NCFA management team.

Key Availability Requirement: The intern must be available on-site every Friday from 12 PM to 4 PM. Some tasks may also be completed remotely Monday through Friday during flexible hours.

RESPONSIBILITIES (may include some / all of the following)

Organizational Management and Operations

  • Maintaining and organizing digital files, records, and documents.

  • Updating and managing organizational databases (e.g., donor, participant records).

  • Assisting with the preparation and tracking of budgets for events and programs.

  • Developing organizational manuals, and process guides.

Fundraising and Development

  • Researching potential donors, grants, or sponsorship opportunities.

  • Drafting donor acknowledgment letters and other correspondence.

  • Supporting the planning and execution of fundraising campaigns and events.

  • Helping to maintain donor databases and ensuring accurate record-keeping.

Event and Program Coordination

  • Acting as on-site support during events to ensure smooth operations.

  • Coordinating with artists, performers, and community partners.

Marketing and Communications

  • Creating and scheduling content for social media platforms.

  • Designing promotional materials such as flyers, posters, and digital assets.

Evaluation and Reporting

  • Collecting data and feedback from events, programs, or campaigns.

  • Assisting with compiling reports for funders, stakeholders, or board members.

  • Reviewing and analyzing organizational or program metrics to support decision-making.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Preference for candidates enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in Arts Administration, Nonprofit Management, English, Business, Marketing, or related fields.

  • Strong organizational, verbal/written communication, and computer skills.

  • Experience with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, etc.) and Microsoft Office required.

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment, and collaborate effectively with a team.

  • Prior experience in non-profit settings is a plus.

Art Gallery Internship

DESCRIPTION

The Northampton Center for the Arts (NCFA) is searching for a part-time gallery intern who is creative, passionate, and organized. The intern will assist with the operations of the Barn Door Gallery under the guidance and mentorship of the Gallery Associate. The job primarily involves engaging with the community, so excellent communication skills, both verbal and listening, are essential. 

The ideal candidate for this position will be self-motivated, creative, interested and/or involved in the arts, and have some organizational and administrative experience. They should be able to utilize their knowledge from their creative background to enhance visitors' experience. Additionally, they must have the ability to navigate Google Docs and Google Sheets and have some knowledge of Canva.

Eligible candidates must be available late May through early August and should be available on-site Wednesday through Friday 3-7 pm, and Saturday, 12-3pm and the remainder of hours must take place remotely.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in learning about and gaining hands-on experience in the various aspects of running a non-profit art gallery, including art handling, cataloging and inventory management, publicity, and working with a nonprofit community-centered organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Help organize and catalog materials and tools with the Gallery Associate. 

  • Assist with gallery operations, including installation and de-installation, spackling, and painting. 

  • Help with publicity and greet visitors during opening hours. 

  • Assist with occasional events held on evenings and weekends, including Arts Night Out, and potentially other event staffing

REQUIREMENTS

  • The ideal candidate must have excellent organizational and communication skills, the ability to learn new skills quickly, and a demonstrated interest in fine arts, art history, and gallery/non-profit administration.

  •  Candidates should be self-motivated and able to work independently. 

  • Experience with Google Drive, internet research, and social media.

ArtPlay Internship

DESCRIPTION

The Northampton Center for the Arts (NCFA) is looking for two self-motivated, creative, organized interns to assist with all aspects of its interdisciplinary summer programming for youth, ArtPlay. The ideal candidate for this position will have experience in more than one creative form (dance/movement, theatre, music, visual art, writing), organizational or administrative experience, and be enthusiastic about working with children.

Eligible candidates must be available late-May through early August, and MUST be available and on-site Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm, for the weeks of June 22-July 31, 2026. Interns may work approximately 1-5 hours/week when programming is not running; those hours are flexible and some can be done remotely.

The benefits to the intern include working with a team of teaching artists who are actively involved in the local community and who are deeply committed to supporting young people in viewing themselves as fundamentally creative people. Opportunity exists for the intern to develop their own classes/activities and to take on leadership roles within the program. NCFA is looking for an intern who is excited about the artistic and administrative skills they have, and is looking to build on those skills in a collaborative, community-oriented environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work with the NCFA Co-Director and ArtPlay Director as needed to plan and implement interdisciplinary summer programming for youth

  • Assist with basic administrative tasks such as checking kids in/tracking attendance

  • Plan, organize and facilitate small group crafts and activities for participants

  • Be able to teach a class in a creative area of expertise

  • Greet/interact with parents/guardians daily during programming

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal intern will be a clear and effective communicator with excellent computer skills, experience with Google Drive, internet research and/or the ability to learn new skills quickly. Solid organizational skills and attention to detail are vital. The intern should have expertise in at least one visual or performing art, and a strong interest in interdisciplinary endeavors, creative placemaking, arts education, and/or the non-profit sector.

Rentals/Space Management Internship

DESCRIPTION

The Northampton Center for the Arts (NCFA)is a non-profit organization that provides affordable space for artists, performers, and educators while developing programming dedicated to arts education, multidisciplinary collaborations, and community connections. At the Northampton Center for the Arts, programming is always evolving, and you will find music, dance, theatre, and visual art classes, rehearsals, art exhibitions, and performances of all kinds that strengthen the arts ecology of the greater Northampton area.

We are seeking an enthusiastic part-time intern who is professional, detail-oriented, and organized to assist our Rentals Director. 

The intern position at the Northampton Center for the Arts consists of general administrative assistance as well as more in-depth specialized work, all with support from the NCFA management team. The administrative tasks can range anywhere from serving as the Center’s on-site representative for office hours, providing assistance at community events housed at NCFA, and organizing information and data into spreadsheets. An ideal candidate is self-motivated, creative, and has some organizational, and administrative experience. They must also be able to navigate Google Docs, Google Sheets, etc. 

Eligible candidates must be available to work on-site on Thursdays from 12pm-4pm. While some work will require the intern to be onsite, some of this work can also be done remotely Monday-Friday with flexible hours.

NCFA is looking for an intern who is excited about the artistic and administrative skills they have and is looking to build on those skills in a collaborative, community-oriented environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assisting the Rentals Director with NCFA’s space rental process, including drafting rental contracts for one day events, posting events publicity materials on our website and web calendar, and entering information into spreadsheets. 

  • Working onsite on Thursday afternoons with the Rentals Director. 

REQUIREMENTS

  • Preference for candidates enrolled in a graduate or undergraduate program in English, Business, Marketing, Nonprofit Management, Arts Management, etc. 

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, verbal/written, computer, and organizational skills. 

  • Non-profit experience is a plus. 

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and as part of a team required. 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Excel, and Google Docs essential.

Art Card Project - January Term Intern

DESCRIPTION

The Northampton Center for the Arts (NCFA) is seeking a January term gallery intern who is creative, passionate, and organized to assist with a gallery project in January 2026. The intern will assist in the organization and management of the Barn Door Gallery’s art card kiosk under the guidance of the Gallery Associate. The role primarily involves organizational skills, space management, and creative problem-solving in the maintenance of this program.

The ideal candidate will be self-motivated and enthusiastic about the arts, possessing strong organizational skills. They should utilize their creative background to curate and organize the front-of-house art booth while keeping the inventory well-maintained. An interest in marketing and design to promote the products to the public is also important. Additionally, candidates must be comfortable using Google Sheets and have basic knowledge of Canva.

Eligible candidates must be available during their January term and should be able to work on a hybrid schedule up to 40 hours per week. This includes on-site hours Wednesday through Friday from 3 PM to 7 PM, and Saturday from 12 PM to 3 PM, with the remaining hours completed remotely.

This is an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in learning about and gaining hands-on experience in various aspects of running and managing an art store within a non-profit art gallery. Responsibilities include art handling, cataloging and inventory management, publicity, and working with a community-centered nonprofit organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Help organize and catalog materials and tools with the Gallery Associate. 

  • Assist with gallery art card kiosk operations, assisting in receiving, cataloging, and managing inventory.

  • Help with publicity and advertisement design of new cards and artists

  • How to update info on the Square Space website

  • Assist with occasional events held on evenings and weekends, including Arts Night Out the second Friday in January
