DESCRIPTION:Facing Flowers: A Pastel Workshop Intensive with Jane Lund
\nSu
 nday evening\, July 20\, 4-7pm plus Monday through Friday\, July 21-25\, 10
 am-4pm
\n
\nNothing can compare to the marvelous floral paintings of the ea
rly Dutch masters or to the color-drenched flower paintings of the Impressi
onists. In this workshop\, however\, we will be approaching the subject of
flowers from a more modern sensibility—a bee’s eye view. Flowers\, when
observed at close range\, are beautiful abstract forms. Georgia O’Keefe
comes to mind. From sketching at the Smith College greenhouse to working fr
om photo enlargements and then actual flowers\, we will be encouraged to cr
eate interesting and dynamic pastel drawings. Join us as we gain inspiratio
n and knowledge from facing flowers—and each other! $375 plus materials l
 ist provided upon registration.
\n
\nPlease see the full listings\, includi

DESCRIPTION:Mosaic Workshop in Smalti with Robert Markey
\nSaturday\, July
 26\, 9:30am-3:30pm
\n
\nSmalti is one of the oldest and most original mater
ials of mosaic art. This thick\, exquisite glass tile holds light the way n
o other material can. It is manufactured at the Orsoni family factory in Ve
nice\, Italy using the same ancient techniques and traditions passed down t
hrough the generations. The colors of smalti are rich and offer the artist
many possibilities to achieve dynamic mosaic works of art. In this one day
intensive workshop\, we will explore this beautiful traditional material by
teaching students how to cut and set smalti. Each student will create a 6"
x6" mosaic panel. Design\, color and composition will also be covered. The
class includes tools and a beautiful selection of Orsoni Italian smalti. Th
is workshop is suitable for beginners and more experienced mosaicists who h
ave never worked with smalti. $140 includes all materials.
\n
\nPlease see
the full listings\, including supplies\, where required\, and application s
ubmission information elsewhere on <a href="http://nohoarts.org/announcemen

ve with Robert Masla\, Saturday and Sunday\, August 2 and 3\, 10am-5pm (lun
 ch break 1-2 pm)
\n
\nWelcome to this supportive atelier environment for tw
o days of focusing on an intensive yet fun experience. The class is designe
d for those who have some painting background. In this exhilarating worksho
p\, we will look at different approaches to creating a painting\, both in t
erms of conception and technique. Through demonstrations\, critiques and di
scussions\, we will learn about different media and some of the techniques
for handling them. We will cover such subjects as composition and design\,
the use and control of both color and light\, as well as the execution of s
uch techniques as under-painting and glazing\, working on a toned ground\,
chiaroscuro\, sfumato\, frotie\, and an introduction on how to execute the
illusionistic techniques of trompe l’oeil and faux textures and finishes.
Artists should bring finished works that they wish critiqued as well as un
finished works that they wish to continue or that may pose problems or “o
pportunities for change.” Students should also bring some blank canvases\
, panels or primed paper for experimenting with new techniques. Be prepared
to bring it all to the next level! $200 plus materials list provided upon
 registration.
\n
\nPlease see the full listings\, including supplies\, wher

DESCRIPTION:Painting with Water-Soluble Oils with Paula Gottlieb
\nTuesday
 and Thursday evenings\, August 12 and 14\, 6:30-9:30pm
\n
\nImagine washing
out a brush filled with oil paint in a container of water. That is only pa
rt of what’s possible with these amazing new paints which are non-toxic a
nd excellent for people with chemical sensitivities. While the finished pai
nting displays the same beauty\, surface and vibrancy of color as a traditi
onal oil painting\, the process of making the painting can contain stumblin
g blocks. We will work with technical exercises to examine and feel the sub
tle differences between these paints and non water-soluble oils. We will tr
y several methods of paint application to canvas and explore ways of blendi
ng and layering paint for a variety of surfaces. There will be a demonstrat
ion on the technique of glazing\, where tints of color are added to the pai
nting medium and layered over dry paint for luminous color transparencies.
You will be provided with individualized attention and critiques\, and no p
rior painting experience is necessary. $105 plus materials list at www.noho
arts.org. The supplies list for these workshop sessions is at the end of th
