This thick\, exquisite glass tile holds light the way n o other material can. It is manufactured at the Orsoni family factory in Ve nice\, Italy using the same ancient techniques and traditions passed down t hrough the generations. The colors of smalti are rich and offer the artist many possibilities to achieve dynamic mosaic works of art. In this one day intensive workshop\, we will explore this beautiful traditional material by teaching students how to cut and set smalti. Each student will create a 6" x6" mosaic panel. That is only pa rt of what’s possible with these amazing new paints which are non-toxic a nd excellent for people with chemical sensitivities. While the finished pai nting displays the same beauty\, surface and vibrancy of color as a traditi onal oil painting\, the process of making the painting can contain stumblin g blocks. We will work with technical exercises to examine and feel the sub tle differences between these paints and non water-soluble oils. We will tr y several methods of paint application to canvas and explore ways of blendi ng and layering paint for a variety of surfaces.
